Summer Series: Farmers Market Guide

I did my first official run to the farmers market about a week ago.  For myself, that means a beautiful day required.  I need to take my time and enjoy what I love to do best.  SHOP FOR FOOD.  I scope the premise and options.  Then I start picking what I like, grab a little snack, and I am on my way.  Simple.

If you are finally entering a warmer climate for the Spring Season, the markets I believe are finally here and with a lot to choose from.  Now is the perfect time to get the most out of them.  It’s not just about organic and locality, it’s really about getting in tune with yourself and community.  I say yourself, because what the Earth provides you with is what would be most beneficial for you.  You support your health and your community as well.  Knowing where and who is putting the food on your table is rewarding for both sides.

Where I’m at it’s a late Spring haul.  This is the time for much more seasonal variety.  What we are still loving:

  • Greens – Kale, lettuces, spinach
  • Cabbage
  • Radishes
  • Asparagus

Then we have some new additions:

  • Strawberries
  • Rhubarb
  • Zucchini

With this produce, you are easily good to buy for the week.  And you definitely do not want to skip the herbs.  So many to choose from!  They have both in bulk and then in the pots, which is very accessible and practical for those that want to buy their own to plant.

My personal favorites to always have on hand:

  • Parsley
  • Mint
  • Basil
  • Cilantro

And for my meat-eaters and cheese-lovas, we got you covered.  Most of the meat you see in farmers markets are hormone-free, free-range and pastured raised.  Since not operated by big corporations, you can be assured that animals were raised and killed in humane ways.  You are ALWAYS welcomed to ask questions to the farmers who raise the animals or obtain the meat.  They are usually very pleasant and informative about those things.

Don’t forget to try out local vendors!  Seriously amazing foods.  Usually made with seasonal ingredients, they are a great way to try something new and get ideas for yourself.

Summer Series: Tips to Staying “Healthy” On Vacation

“Healthy” – What makes you feel great.  During the act.  After the fact.  Simple.

I am back and trying to get things moving, you guys!  My trip was just what I needed for a little relaxation, inspiration, and motivation, to give all I had to give out to you all.

This is the first post of my Summer Series!  From today until the first day of Summer, I have a few posts lined up, on how to enjoy and prepare for the hot months to come!  This one was inspired from my recent trip.  I dealt with extra heat and humidity, so I thought I would start with something we all get to enjoy this time of year.  Vacation!!

A vacation is a way to incorporate both new and exciting, with tried and trues of what really makes us feel centered.  You want that, trust me.  I used to stray very far from eating habits and routines during vacation, so much so I would need a detox to feel back on track, lose that extra weight.  I don’t believe a vacation has to be like that.  You want to feel great during and even better after.  You went on this vacation to feel renewed, inspired, adventurous.  Your health is the gateway to being able to enjoy that much MORE.

Keep to most of your everyday routines.  I used to be told that on vacation, you have to let go, that it’s unrealistic to take what you use and do somewhere else.  Not true!  Whether you find yourself in a house or hotel, most likely you have a bathroom, mini fridge, and a kitchen of some sorts within the area.

Unless you are going hiking, then disregard.  Since I was staying for about a week, I bought a few things that I could not bring with me.

  • lemon
  • applecider vinegar

*If you don’t have a fridge or kitchen to take advantage of,  I recommend water every morning and night.  Hydration is the key.

That’s it!  Everythingh else of non perishables, I used mini-jars ($5 at target) and bought travel sized beauty products.  Even my tea and salt, I was able to bring in a small bag.

  • Jars filled with coconut oil.  One as my body and face moisturizer.  Another for oil pulling.
  • Jar of deodorant.  I make mine in bulk, so needed only a bit.
  • Store bought cleanser/toner.  This is good to limit extra oils, since you would be at risk of spilling during travel.
  • Mini dry brush for everyday skin and body detox.
  • Triphala.  My morning digestion supplement

If you happen to have a fridge, take advantage, please! I like to keep to light snacks.  Lots of fruit.  With no kitchen, going out to eat is inevitable.  But even you eat right in between, and keep to just one splurge meal, the only thing you are going to crave after is a home cooked meal.

  • Fruits.  Bananas, apples, oranges.  If you have a fridge, pineapples and berries are a great addition!
  • Rice chips and hummus
  • Granola and yogurt

Did you know that travel and different surroundings can effect you regardless if you are eating right or not? Everything from your digestion to skin can be impacted.  We are sensitive creatures.  The good news is that even one simple product or food can help that.

Aloe vera became my go to.  My digestion wasn’t perfect leaving so a couple of days in I had to take action.  Alittle bit cut up to sooth bloat and constipation.  It worked like magic.  Since I was also in the sun, I used it as a soothing ointment for my face and neck.  The most sensitive parts of my body.

So here are some of my favorites.  Whatever is your morning beverage and your favorite cleanser, stick with it!  Vacations should be packed with what you want.  Whether relaxing or adventure.  Feeling great is part of the package that I hope you signed up for!

March Lovin’: Cleanse Me Edition, Recipe Included!

Hello, my dears!

A lighter post for you all.  One filled with pictures, hidden stories, and a way to remember enjoyment of the little things

I was looking through my intentions for the ending month.  As to kind of see how I have accomplished some, need to work on many, and how I can go further.  Well, a couple that stood out was my intention to feel daring and to humble myself.  Both, I believe are in the process of being conquered and definitely are to move further.

Well, I stepped up my business game.  Little videos and plans here and there.  Just a start on how I want to get out there, and then actually doing it.  Then I did my detox.  And I found a little goes along way, especially with food.  Sweet Soul Nourishment can be found anywhere.

Remember, when times were simple?  Or so I thought.  When we were just eating whatever and cooking up a storm?  Whatever felt right, for the day or week, I was on a mission to create.  Something delicious, lasting, and nourishing.  As all meals should be, but with a little twist.  The little twist being all the meat, cheese, and comfort, to make the week seem a bit more enjoyable.

All fun and games during the winter season, until of course the detox came into play.  Which is exactly what I needed.  A detox to rid habits, foods, and cravings that came about more often.  Not that I couldn’t enjoy those delicious pastas and meats, but I think a calling to Nature’s food was in full blown with Spring

My favorite were the smoothies, and I am happy to say that I have I have kept it up beyond my detox!  Instead of my breakfast of bread, butter, and eggs, I transitioned into a vegan green smoothie lover.  I never thought that would happen, since to be quite honest, I’ve done detoxes before and the whole drink for breakfast thing never stuck.  Maybe it’s the fact I can make it myself? The beauty in the colors?  Whatever it is, I’m going to make it last for awhile I think.

Simple dinners also played a huge role as well.  Quinoa and roasted vegetables are something I would gladly do at least once of week with PLENTY of leftovers for lunch as well.  Pretty much how I started really learning to cook, I’m glad to revisit.  The basics of cutting veggies, roasting, and making a filling easy meal.

Early mornings.  So close, but yet so far.  If you known me for a while, to say I’m not the biggest sleeper is an understatement.  While I envy those who can fall asleep by 9/10, to get those precious eight hours in, I also love the fact I am an early a bird regardless of the very minimum I get of sleeping beauty.  Yet, I have found myself wanting more.  More sleep and even earlier mornings.  Think it can be done?  I shall keep you updated.

Can we talk about the warmer weather?  At first, I looked at it as a tease.  It was making me miss my palm trees way too much.  I don’t get impressed too easily either.  BUT, I will say it has motivated me to get more into the swing of things.  A little more activity and natural vibes.  I’m starting to remember my love for minimalism all over again.

And now….

A little recipe, almost to easy to even call it that.  Whether on a detox or not, it’s perfect for a when you need a little more than a smoothie or juice.  Especially, when you have leftovers of quinoa that needs to be eaten.  My real motivation.

IMG_2385Quinoa Breakfast Bowl

  • 1 cup cooked quinoa
  • 1/2 cup almond milk
  • 1 tbs chia seeds
  • cinnamon
  • fruit (I incorporated frozen mixed berries and mango)
  • 1 spoon almond butta

Mix the quinoa, milk, chia seeds, and cinnamon.  Let sit for about 20 minutes to allow quinoa and chia seeds to absorb the liquid.  Top as you please!

 

PS.  I really need some new bowls.

I was debating on whether I should even bother posting this… but, I am only a few days late!  Really though, it’s been another crazy month. Crazy hours, new decisions, and trying to enjoy days off, my mind has felt a bit scattered.  Trying hard to keep true and find some last month lovin’.

So, here’s my lil’ recap.

I’m loving Fall in Florida.  I must admit, it took me awhile to get used to.  Just a sweater?  Still wearing sandals and then boots in the same week?  Its like spring with palm trees and a little less humidity.

Since the weather and humidity here has dropped a little, my skin feels it.  And is not shy of showing it.  Cold months equal a bit more skin care and I must say, I don’t hate it.  Just another excuse to try some new products.  Here’s a preview to another Conscious Beauty post for you all!

So with this different transition into a new season, I have been trying to eat a little healthier as well.  Basically at lunch… in a form of snacks. Hummus and chips save the day, almost everyday.  Where I work, cheap healthy lunches are slim.  As I work more day shifts, I am also realizing I should plan more… So chips and dip will do until dinner 😉

Still enjoying good food with amazing company.  I love the fact I can enjoy some good Peruvian food, tasty Italian, and vegan feasting.  My favorite kind of diet.

I did make pancakes which of course needed to be shared.  All I used was an organic whole grain pancake mix, an egg, almond milk, then doctored up with some cranberries and pecans.  Amazing!

I wanted to start the week with a little something positive, a little something different.  After a world wind of emotions and events, there are a few things I have remained faithful to, admired, and learned to love through out my blogging years.

Sometime soon, I would love for this to become a weekend thing.  There are just so many randoms and pictures I take within a week and never get to share!  For now this will do!

Food Blogs!

Ya’ll know, or will soon know, I started as a daily blogger of food.  From that, it turned into how I experimented in the kitchen, baking, trying new recipes, and different types of food.  Some came from books, but I’ve always been big on food blogs!  They taught me to love the process, presentation, and of course taste of homemade kickass creations.  Some of my favorites:

How Sweet It Is.  Love! Making mouthwatering, drool worthy, gluttonous(?) creations.  Seriously think peanut butter and bacon cookies.  Wha?!?!

Joy the Baker.  A California girl with a southern heart in my eyes.  Basically how I perceive my North Eastern self in love with all things tropical.

A Cozy Kitchen.  The name says it all.  Beauty and taste all in one.

Lady and Pups.  I really just look at this blog as a dreamer.  Goddamn so intricate, but looks so worth it.  Just need to find someone to cook for me like this 😉

Basically I love to feel and look amazing.  From the inside out of course, but sometimes even when feeling like crap, I learned to pull myself together and go about my day.  It actually helps.  I won’t lie I feel a little more confident with a little mascara, lipstick, and/or a cute simple outfit.

Maybe it’s the industry of retail that has bitten my behind after 10 years, or just the extra time I have available to put a little something together.  Either way, I find it fun and interesting to play with!

August Thangs: Foodie Style

I love these kinds of posts. I just drown you in pictures.  It’s amazing.

August, has been one of those months.  Felt like the longest month ever.  I almost feel bad for rushing it, but I’m over it.  I’m ready for a new season, new lipsticks, different foods, and a detox.  But until then, I enjoyed what I could.

So, I wanted to start on touching base about getting back into it.  Into the holistic healthy way of living I love so much.  Seriously.  My cravings for greens and fresh ingredients were at it’s highest this season than ever before.  So, for starters, I got back into meal prepping.  Mostly breakfast and lunch.

Coming home, I will not lie that I do not stray far from the usual.  This is that “growing up hispanic” things.  Especially with a Grandma who always wants to see you eating.  Rice and beans.  Avocado. Kimchi for good measure (and good digestion).

Did we notice anything different?  Meeeeaaaaattt!  My other craving.  During the month, I’ve become a bit of a crazy sleeper.  Sometimes 3 hours, sometimes 8 hours.  That’s where I fell most short when trying to get on track.  I used food and a lot of coffee to keep me energized.  No, I didn’t picture all the starbucks and cafe con leche I consumed in two weeks.  Protien and fats kept me full the most, and my paychecks allowed for the extra goodies and pounds as well 😉

Then you have the times when you are sans groceries or rushing around trying to put on crazy eyeliner.  Whole Foods Market always has my back.

I don’t think I COOKED anything for myself this month.  Don’t ask me to cook for you.  Only breakfast.  I own breakfast.

I also went out a few times.  I think twice out of the those times I did, I was pretty impressed.

I finally found a Peruvian restaurant in Tampa, that lives up to the ones in NJ I hold near and dear.  Machu Picchu Restaurant did it for me. A standard Saltado de Mariscos, that was delicious in it’s own simplicity.  Out of trying two other places in the area, I was so happy to find a place I really enjoyed!

Let’s talk about brunch.  I have been brunch deprived.  It’s a shame too, because you can never go wrong with brunch, just need enough mimosas to cancel out bad food.  Luckily, I have some foodie friends here who are willing to show and try new places with me!  First stop, Ella’s Folk Art Cafe for Soul Food Sundays!

Would definitely love to try this place again.  The menu looked amazing!

Other times, you are a little cheap, kind of lazy, and ready for a weekend.  That’s when frozen vegan pizza and cheap wine come to the rescue.  Late night cozy lovin’.

Other events did occur that didn’t have much to do with food.  I discovered a new mall.  Tanned at least once.  And I WENT TO YOGA.  AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK.  Big deals people.  It was scary and hard.  But it brought back feelings and memories.  Those inspirational kickass feelings you get doing a warrior 2 while your sweat turns into puddles.  Remembering that even though your body cannot do what it once did one year ago, you know your body still has the ability to get there again.  Goddamn yoga, you win me over every time.

August, you were alright.  Started out slow, but how quickly did everything happen all at once.  Feelings, decisions, and a start in planning something new.  September, I hope you are ready for me.

Chia Seed Pudding

Because it’s never too late/early to think about breakfast!

I am practically Queen when it comes to easy semi-homemade recipes.  Trust me, I made sangria last night.  White super fruit sangria from a bottle and a chopped up plum.  Queen. So since I’m pretty good at it, I’m going to share it.  Share my strengths.  Why make shit complicated?  I kind of wanted to talk and ramble in a way, but I’m really just more excited about the food.  Life updates shall come soon enough.

Today I’m going to share with you a recipe from back in the days.  I’ve been making this make-ahead breakfast/dessert for years.  Since my organic vegan days.  Total health food.  Yes to progress!  We have our almond milk base, but feel free to use soy, rice, or organic milk.  Chia seeds which are amazing.  A power house of omega 3 fatty acid, the good fat found in salmon, eggs, flax seeds, and some nut butters.  The fiber helps for digestion and keeping us full, the healthy way.  And of course, we have the antioxidants and vitamins that come with every kind of plant-based superfood.  Cinnamon is a healthy spice I love to add in all things with a sweet tone to it.

It is once again, simple, adaptable, and great for busy weekdays.  As a healthy breakfast you may keep it simple with just 3 ingredients.  Spruce it up with fruit, sweetener (raw honey!), nut butter, or granola.  Seriously, options are always up to your creative minds.

Chia Seed Pudding

  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 3 tbs chia seeds
  • dash of cinnamon

Combine all ingredients in a bowl or mason jar.  Cover and store in the fridge for 1 hour to overnight.  For something a little more sweet add banana and honey.  Other fruit, granola, and nut butters work perfectly as well.  Enjoy, my dears!

I should let you know that I officially have an extra 15 minutes some mornings.  You may use that to snooze or put on that blush and winged eyeliner.  Regardless, you’ll feel like a total badass.
