Summer Series: Farmers Market Guide

I did my first official run to the farmers market about a week ago.  For myself, that means a beautiful day required.  I need to take my time and enjoy what I love to do best.  SHOP FOR FOOD.  I scope the premise and options.  Then I start picking what I like, grab a little snack, and I am on my way.  Simple.



If you are finally entering a warmer climate for the Spring Season, the markets I believe are finally here and with a lot to choose from.  Now is the perfect time to get the most out of them.  It’s not just about organic and locality, it’s really about getting in tune with yourself and community.  I say yourself, because what the Earth provides you with is what would be most beneficial for you.  You support your health and your community as well.  Knowing where and who is putting the food on your table is rewarding for both sides.


Where I’m at it’s a late Spring haul.  This is the time for much more seasonal variety.  What we are still loving:

  • Greens – Kale, lettuces, spinach
  • Cabbage
  • Radishes
  • Asparagus

Then we have some new additions:

  • Strawberries
  • Rhubarb
  • Zucchini
  • Spring onions galore! IMG_3185


With this produce, you are easily good to buy for the week.  And you definitely do not want to skip the herbs.  So many to choose from!  They have both in bulk and then in the pots, which is very accessible and practical for those that want to buy their own to plant.

My personal favorites to always have on hand:

  • Parsley
  • Mint
  • Basil
  • Cilantro



And for my meat-eaters and cheese-lovas, we got you covered.  Most of the meat you see in farmers markets are hormone-free, free-range and pastured raised.  Since not operated by big corporations, you can be assured that animals were raised and killed in humane ways.  You are ALWAYS welcomed to ask questions to the farmers who raise the animals or obtain the meat.  They are usually very pleasant and informative about those things.


Don’t forget to try out local vendors!  Seriously amazing foods.  Usually made with seasonal ingredients, they are a great way to try something new and get ideas for yourself.

Embracing a Transformational Season

So Spring is officially here.  I know there has been a mix of weather going on.  Here in the Sunshine State? Well let’s just say I got a bit of a Summer glow already 😉  I know the cold, and even snow, is around for some people, but now is the perfect time to recognize and embrace the small changes!  Longer days, prettier sunsets, and a little more green to come.

I wanted to try and incorporate a post about how to embrace spring in a more holistic healthy view and realistic bad-ass-self way.  So let’s try and do this, shall we?

Now here is Florida, I must admit it has been Spring for the last month, borderline summer.  I am not complaining, but rather embraced it with open arms.  First and foremost, I definitely been eating way more salads and fresh veggies.  With local fruits and vegetables always in stock from the warmer season, their is really no excuse not to get the most of optimum nutrition from your meals.  In season for your environment is key to staying healthy during the year.  Your body wants the food the earth has naturally provided!

During spring the foods are lighter.  We are talking greens to help detox your body of winters extras still in the system.  How to do it?  Add more juices to your regimen.  You don’t need to go into full detox mode, but rather slowly, your body can get into a transformation on it’s own.  So, not just juices, but fresh greens, even chopped vegetable salads to get the full hydration and nutrition your body deserves going into the warmer months.
Get active and get out there!!!  Not only will this help your body transformation, but your mind as well.  Join a gym.  Go practice yoga.  Go walking/running.  Make an effort to start your own exercise routine.  To be honest, this is something that I fell back on.  I am more of a foodie than a fitness person.  But I am allowing a little extra and time (and money) to the cause.  Our body needs the sweat to cleanse and get our systems moving again.  Going out and do that gives us that motivation.  What better motivation then seeing others wanting to kick some ass and fat too!

Now, when I say get out there, I say that because usually the winter months gives us the perfect excuse to stay home more, eat a little hardier, and just get cozy with close family and friends.  I’ve been using this gorgeous weather in Florida to never stay home.  Semi amazing- semi dangerous.  But, moving on.  I love the fact that I can explore this state with the advantage of amazing weather.  I’ve been trying to get around in Tampa.  Since the city is so big, I usually have somewhere new to go, even if it involves just walking around, passing the river.

For all my North Easterners, go down town, farmer’s markets, parks, NYC!!!  Ugh, what I would give to go to my local downtown or walk around the city for a couple of hours.  Crazy, you really do take things for granted that were once so accessible to you.  I really believe you can make the best of what’s around you now.

I feel as if this part is more for the summer or leading up to that amazing season.  Here in Florida, it already is beach and pool weather.  Sorry I’m not sorry.  The downfall of having heat so soon.  Damn, your girl did not have enough time to get bikini ready!  As of now, I am balancing the angel inside of me that is say, “Get your green juice on and coconut water.”  But, then I have this dormant party girl saying “Girrrlll, time for mojitos!!”  Do we see the dilemma?

Although, I have no problem balancing the two.  Love a good green smoothie and a nice summer drank.  Ok, I’m going to stop writing how I talk.  If you know me, this is real talk.

Between eating a bit lighter, more sweat, and more social event, I guarantee your energy will go up and the pounds will gently come off.

Part 2:  Transformation within the Universe

I chose to write this post now, because as of late I’ve become extremely into the stars.  I can’t help notices the “coincidences”  of what has happened in my life as of late.  From the moment they told me come January, I would be going through a change that will be life altering, to now where the planets have aligned to help me deal with something that has been very difficult for me… Relationships.

This Full Moon Total Lunar Eclipse, Blood Moon, will occur early in the morning on Saturday, at least for my Easterners.  The Full Moon gives off nothing more than pure energy.  The moon rules the tides, the waters.  As our body is mostly just that water, we tend to feel this energy, and can be mistaken for the acts of crazy’s that come about during this time.

Libra’s Lunar Eclipse, I’ve read, is about love and compassion.  With a relationship with a loved one that has been a bit estrange and difficult,  to even the intimate ones that have been a bit confusing.  We must move forward, and respond with nothing more than understanding and an open heart.  Even if it’s HARD.  To be honest, writing this helps me realize what I need to do and where I need to direct my energy.

So whilst, you don’t spend too much of your energy on relationships that don’t seem to be all there, focus it on your creativity.  This is the Moon to get into the relationship with yourself, and pick up on something that has been brewing for quite a while.  I know for myself, I’ve been having a hard time with just that as well.  I may not know exactly where I’m heading, I can only try to stay on track on where I believe I want to go, a journey through wellness and adventure.

P.S.  Sometimes a smile, even when your upset, helps the cause.  Dress how you want to feel, that helps as well.  Even when going through what may feel like the toughest time, put on some lipstick or get a fresh cut, and get the fuck out there!!


Spring Detox Part 2

Good morning ya’ll!

Hope everyone has had an amazing week!!! Mine definitely had it’s ups and downs.  I took quite a hiatus, first due to work.  My schedule has changed drastically and it’s definitely going to take some time to get used to.  I’ve been keeping focused with work, eating right, and some yoga.  Can we also talk about how I lost 4 months of information on my phone?  Yea, it was somewhat traumatizing, especially for me who had so many pictures!!  You know what that means?  This might be a slightly less appeasing post to the eye.  No pictures from my detox 😦

So let’s talk about how the rest went, shall we?

What I ate/drank?

  • Lemon with water upon awaking
  • Green juice every morning.  Nothing like starting your day with greens, ginger, and lemon.
  • Raw ginger cereal with raw cashew milk.
  • Green tea once a day
  • Gut lovin’ salad.  There will be a post on that soon!  It’s so good and taste so fresh.
  • Kombucha
  • More juice!  Preferably the Carrot Juice from Suja, or the Blueprint Beet Juice.
  • Ginger or peppermint tea

What I did?

  • #yogaeverydamnday (sweat)
  • Only breakfast and lunch
  • 5am or 5:30am wake up calls
  • Bed between 10pm – 11pm

How I felt?

Amazing during and after!  I lasted 5 great days.  I was never hungry, which was one of my priorities.  I wanted to enjoy everything about this detox.

My body felt light with all the fresh food and juices.  My yoga practice also helped by sweating out the toxins and giving me more strength. *Staying grounded during a detox, can actually be very difficult.  You’re body and mind may want to take flight, resulting in not being able to concentrate in everyday life task.  A vata obstacle.

Can we get real for a little?  My intestines were definitely moving.  I was regular and going to the bathroom easier and more frequently.  Just in the morning, I noticed a lot more evacuation.  This let me feel more secure with my body and health.  Nothing is worse than feeling backed up and bloated while trying to lighten up!  I was also great not to depend on breakfast in order to go.  I was able to go at times after my lemon with water or green juice.

Now we can talk about energy.  I don’t remember ever feeling depleted like I usually do!  I was fine with no coffee in the morning.  My yoga practice definitely woke me up every morning.  Through out the day, I made sure to keep myself well hydrated and fed, to not promote any drop in blood sugar.  I went to bed feeling light and was able to wake up easy by 5:30 every morning!  Less food is sometimes more guys!  I really couldn’t believe how well it turned out!

I highly recommend this detox if you are a health conscious eater to begin with.  You must love food and vegetables enough to want to nourish your body with it for a good amount of time.  Because, I did eat “normally” I extended my detox for a medium length of time.  Of course a juice cleanses would be shorter and a whole food cleanse would be a duration of a couple of weeks.  I had 1 cheat meal from Whole Foods and it was amazing.  Just a mostly raw salad and a kombucha, but it was just the slight midweek treat I needed 😉

You want to love what you are doing for yourself, basically because you love and respect the body you possess. We are all just souls, protected by your body.  Honor it!  Love it!

My Spring Detox Part 1


Are you tired of this subject?  To be honest, I am.  I think it’s because I started late in the game, but I’m ready to for the warm weather to become consistent so all I crave is fresh vegetables and fruit!  Oh, I should probably mention that it was 80 degrees two days ago, and we woke up to snow this morning.  Mother nature, I am sorry for the way you have been treated, but why you gotta be so mean?

Can you tell I’m a little upset?  But, I shall remain positive and say, I am more than glad to be on this mini detox now.  For me, I waited until my body and finances were a little more in check.  More so my body though.  It was important to get rid of any monthly bloat and plan what I will be having over the next few days.  The cleanse I chose?  Whole food cleanse, high in raw foods.


My reasons.

  1. Finances.  It was cheaper for me to eat healthy most of the time than juice.  Don’t get me wrong, I did splurge on a few juices, but just a few and enough to get me through four or five days.  Focusing on maybe two a day.  When you sub a bunch of veggies for the usual groceries such as extra yummy sauces, dairy, and meat/fish.  It can actually come out almost the same.
  2. Pitta Problems.  During recent months, I have noticed my body becoming very overheated.  It has been that way for a while now.  Whenever I drink wine, eat heavy, or even eat a lot.  Generally, I am a little more cold than the usual person.  But simple things trigger my heating reaction, specifically on my face.  Redness, to rashes, my pores become enlarged and irritated.  I am using this detox as a way to see if I can cure/control this, if not inform myself more about it.  I am using a high raw food diet to do that.


So let’s talk about my first day!!!


I didn’t use my own advice on a pre-cleanse diet….  A diet full of white rice and flour, fish, eggs, and dairy the weekend prior, was not a good idea.  From somebody who is sensitive to those foods, I found myself less than comfortable that Monday starting my cleanse.  So much so, I didn’t even want to go to yoga.  I actually ate a little more so maybe the food would get things moving inside my stomach.  A couple of juices, salad, and canned soup were my drugs of choice.  For dranks it was a Ginger Kombucha and a lot of Eater’s Digest Tea.

*Side note* Did anyone see the lunar eclipse?  My special self woke up at 3am to see that blood moon, but all I saw was a cloudy night sky.  Tear.  Depending on your sign it was supposed to give you a certain reading and energy. I used this rare occasion to really manifest some kind of energy.  Some mantras and words to better cope with what has been going on around and inside me?  I’ve been really into astrology spiritual energy, so it’s something I hope to talk more about soon!

Tuesday was a better day.  I didn’t find myself as hungry.  I think my body was still trying to rid and digest the other foods I have been consuming.  For breakfast I had a a raw cereal with a a third of the Suja coconut milk (forgot to picture) and a small cup of green tea.  Lunch was an alright salad:


  • massaged kale and dandelions
  • sprouts and sprouted beans
  • radishes
  • quinoa
  • parsley
  • avocado
  • homemade dressing (share later on if perfected!)

So I’m trying to keep this up for a few more days.  If I eat out, I’ll probably go for the healthier whole foods option.  With a green juice first thing in the morning for a few days, I’ll hopefully be feeling a bit better in no time!

My biggest challenge:  Saturday morning if I can keep aways from Whole Foods scones and coffee 😉

What have you heard about detoxes? I know when I first started hearing about main stream detoxes, the water with lemon, cayenne, and syrup one (was that even the ingredients?), was the thing to do.  Back then, I used to laugh at such an idea.  It may have worked for some, but never I!  Oh, have times changed.


There are so many different detoxes out there, sometimes even I’m skeptical about what really works.  The thing is most of them do.  It’s just finding what is right for you and what you think you may actually enjoy.  Yes, cleansing is supposed to be enjoyable!  A spring detox should leave you feeling light, clean, fresh, and rejuvenated!  It’s spring after all!


If you are looking for a way to jump start your healthy and fit lifestyle, there is really no better time than with the change of season, specifically towards spring.  With the days longer and nature blooming, your energy and need to shed away those winter blues (and insulation) is here. Now is the time, because I will remind you, summer is around the corner.  And if your anything like me, or just human, all the hibernation, plus extra winter hardy food and fats, are still hanging on tight to your organs/hips.  Cleansing is an amazing experience and if you are interested in knowing a little bit more about one, please don’t hesitate!

Preparing for a Spring Detox

So, the weather seems to be warming up in my part of town!  I’m hoping for no more below freezing temperatures and longer days.  Daylight savings, you may come now.

I know for myself, it has been a brutal winter for me to keep up with most of my better habits.  First with holiday festivities, cold weather winter meals, and cozy beds tempting you stay asleep a little bit longer, I feel for you.   And do not even get me started with the “snow days.”  With the slight signs of warmer weather and longer days, I am hoping certain habits will come easier for both you and me, and by hoping, I mean they will!  I am ready for some lean greens, juices, sun, light clothing (read minimal clothing), and early wake up calls!  So I am going to let the lighter fairs, juices, and early wakeup calls help me out towards minimal clothing 🙂  So where do we begin?

I was doing some bedtime reading yesterday, and something caught my eye.  I am reading “The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali,” and I came across an idea that I think pertained to preparing for a detox.

“The impure mind reads it from the wrong angle.  So the mind mud be pure.  It is all well and good to learn the different methods of meditation and the experiences that could come to you.  But if you are really serious about the business and really want to go deep into meditation, take care to have a clean mind.  Otherwise, you are not going to get it.”  Book 1, Sutra 46

Spiritually, when we meditate, we do with the intention that something will happen.  I guess you can say nothing.  With a pure mind, we get the most out of our actions and main goal.  This is not just in meditating, but anything we do that may be challenge for us.  The only way to get through a detox and actually get something out of it, is to prepare.  Mentally and physically we need to get ourselves ready for what lies ahead.

Mentally and/or spiritually, we have to have our intentions straight.  My favorite, and my usual, is to heal my body through the removal of ama(toxins) naturally with minimal effort.  I myself do not want to feel tired and overwhelmed during the detox and do not want my body to work hard to cleanse itself.  Essentially, that is what a detox is, to give your gut a break so your body may focus on doing it’s main function, which is cleanse itself!  When you feel good and do good.

My second reason, and probably the reason for most, is too lose that extra winter layer or at least get a headstart. If you experienced a colder winter, your body is probably already telling you it’s time for a change.  It’s time for good food, sweat, and crop tops.  Yes, I like to get ahead myself, summer is my true love.

Physically, it is a bit tough.  Although you may want to eat and drink what you like until a detox, chances are that it is not a good decision.  When you over indulge before the detox, food can act like a drug.  You will go through withdrawal during your cleanse.  Your body will be craving with more intensity all those foods you left behind so sudden.  Whether your demise may be caffeine, sugar, bread, or all of the above, back away for the next few weeks slowly.  Maybe limit the coffee to a few times a week or once a day.  Cut sugar out during breakfast.  Fill up on cooked hearty vegetable.  Work out a few times a week, which is my hardest part.  Your body and mind will be in the right place to change and get the maximum benefit without “struggle”.

Even when you start to doubt yourself, can’t make it all the way, or “cheat”, when you have the right intention, and good feeling, you cleanse just by leaving that stress behind.  Did you know that stress wreaks havoc internally?  So be kind and gentle with yourself.  Accept what you are able to do.  If you go into a challenge ready, most likely you will succeed.  Compare it to a sport.  You train and become prepared for an event or match.  Afterwards, whether you won or lost, if you gave it your best effort, you feel good.  Because, regardless you were in a good state going into it.  If you want to maintain the benefits of the detox, you must stick with that, “I want to feel my best to look and do my best all the f*king time!” attitude 😉  Before and after!

So the next few weeks, I will go over some of the stuff I have been preparing.  How I’ve been trying to eat and act with a little more mindfulness, easy everyday detox ideas, and my favorite, seasonal foods!

Hope this helps to jumpstart your body to get ready for the Spring.  I usually don’t do well with change, but somehow I am always excited for any change that involves yummy foods and warm weather!


Coffee Date



Good morning everyone!

So today I decided we should chat.  Things I’m feeling, obsessing over, changes, and just life in general.  I feel as if I broke away for a bit, so I thought this would be a good way to say, “Oh my!  How are you?  What’s new?”


1.  Well, the farmer’s markets have officially begun to open, at least in my neck of the woods.  I was just too excited to go for the first time, that I actually went in the rain.  Rain or shine, people, I will be there!  I wish I could have taken pictures, but it was dreary and dead.  Just picture A LOT of greens.  I finally got to buy local dandelion, kale, and radishes.  Perfect produce for the spring.

2.  I finished a couple of books last week.  I always try to read one inspirational one and another informative one at once.  It gives for a great start in the morning and downtime during the day.  I just finished The Four Agreements and The 3 -Seasons Diet.  Both excellent and focus on how to use ancient teachings and ways of life in today’s modern world.  Now I think I’m going to focus on some fun reading.  Bought this one a while ago and have yet to pick it up.  Yes, cookbooks are fun to read.



3.  I’ve been on a kick of taking powerhouse detoxifying ingredients and mixing it with everyday yummy foods.  Sprouts and radishes combined with hummus, feta, and thick whole grain bread?Please and thank you.  Dandelions, kale, and pasta?  I’m winning my own heart.

4.  I’ve become a little bit of a day dreamer.  I tell no lies.  I could be totally engaged in something and then out of nowhere I notice my mind has wandered and I’m staring creepily at the house across the street.  Maybe it’s the spring weather?  My desire to be able to enjoy the beautiful weather?  I’ve been working a lot, so I might be going in withdrawal from just being able to take walks in the sun.  Es la vida.

5.  But, I have been able to enjoy the night life a little more, or at least I’m trying to!  Since my weekdays are shot, my weekends I’m trying to leave time to hang out with people.   Cool people to be exact.  Summer nights anyone?



6.  That bread pudding from yesterday’s post.  I made another version the week after.  Twas delicious.  I’m calling it Monkey Mind Bread Pudding.  I got the idea from Chitta Vritti!  What we use in yoga, for mind chatter or the “monkey mind.”  I think that’s what’s been going on with my day dreaming episodes.  It now also reflects my cooking.  Filled with banana, raisins, coconut, and almond, I guess I couldn’t make up my mind.  Yummy.  Chitta Vritti, can’t be all bad 😉
