Summer Series: Tips to Staying “Healthy” On Vacation

IMG_3028

“Healthy” – What makes you feel great.  During the act.  After the fact.  Simple.

I am back and trying to get things moving, you guys!  My trip was just what I needed for a little relaxation, inspiration, and motivation, to give all I had to give out to you all.

This is the first post of my Summer Series!  From today until the first day of Summer, I have a few posts lined up, on how to enjoy and prepare for the hot months to come!  This one was inspired from my recent trip.  I dealt with extra heat and humidity, so I thought I would start with something we all get to enjoy this time of year.  Vacation!!

A vacation is a way to incorporate both new and exciting, with tried and trues of what really makes us feel centered.  You want that, trust me.  I used to stray very far from eating habits and routines during vacation, so much so I would need a detox to feel back on track, lose that extra weight.  I don’t believe a vacation has to be like that.  You want to feel great during and even better after.  You went on this vacation to feel renewed, inspired, adventurous.  Your health is the gateway to being able to enjoy that much MORE.

IMG_3017.

Keep to most of your everyday routines.  I used to be told that on vacation, you have to let go, that it’s unrealistic to take what you use and do somewhere else.  Not true!  Whether you find yourself in a house or hotel, most likely you have a bathroom, mini fridge, and a kitchen of some sorts within the area.

Unless you are going hiking, then disregard.  Since I was staying for about a week, I bought a few things that I could not bring with me.

  • lemon
  • applecider vinegar

*If you don’t have a fridge or kitchen to take advantage of,  I recommend water every morning and night.  Hydration is the key.

That’s it!  Everythingh else of non perishables, I used mini-jars ($5 at target) and bought travel sized beauty products.  Even my tea and salt, I was able to bring in a small bag.

IMG_3054

  • Jars filled with coconut oil.  One as my body and face moisturizer.  Another for oil pulling.
  • Jar of deodorant.  I make mine in bulk, so needed only a bit.
  • Store bought cleanser/toner.  This is good to limit extra oils, since you would be at risk of spilling during travel.
  • Mini dry brush for everyday skin and body detox.
  • Triphala.  My morning digestion supplement

If you happen to have a fridge, take advantage, please! I like to keep to light snacks.  Lots of fruit.  With no kitchen, going out to eat is inevitable.  But even you eat right in between, and keep to just one splurge meal, the only thing you are going to crave after is a home cooked meal.

  • Fruits.  Bananas, apples, oranges.  If you have a fridge, pineapples and berries are a great addition!
  • Rice chips and hummus
  • Granola and yogurt

IMG_3063

Did you know that travel and different surroundings can effect you regardless if you are eating right or not? Everything from your digestion to skin can be impacted.  We are sensitive creatures.  The good news is that even one simple product or food can help that.

Aloe vera became my go to.  My digestion wasn’t perfect leaving so a couple of days in I had to take action.  Alittle bit cut up to sooth bloat and constipation.  It worked like magic.  Since I was also in the sun, I used it as a soothing ointment for my face and neck.  The most sensitive parts of my body.

So here are some of my favorites.  Whatever is your morning beverage and your favorite cleanser, stick with it!  Vacations should be packed with what you want.  Whether relaxing or adventure.  Feeling great is part of the package that I hope you signed up for!

November Lovin’

IMG_0484

I was debating on whether I should even bother posting this… but, I am only a few days late!  Really though, it’s been another crazy month. Crazy hours, new decisions, and trying to enjoy days off, my mind has felt a bit scattered.  Trying hard to keep true and find some last month lovin’.

So, here’s my lil’ recap.

IMG_0079

I’m loving Fall in Florida.  I must admit, it took me awhile to get used to.  Just a sweater?  Still wearing sandals and then boots in the same week?  Its like spring with palm trees and a little less humidity.

IMG_0525H&M

Since the weather and humidity here has dropped a little, my skin feels it.  And is not shy of showing it.  Cold months equal a bit more skin care and I must say, I don’t hate it.  Just another excuse to try some new products.  Here’s a preview to another Conscious Beauty post for you all!

IMG_0515

So with this different transition into a new season, I have been trying to eat a little healthier as well.  Basically at lunch… in a form of snacks. Hummus and chips save the day, almost everyday.  Where I work, cheap healthy lunches are slim.  As I work more day shifts, I am also realizing I should plan more… So chips and dip will do until dinner 😉

IMG_0003

IMG_0414Whole Foods helps too!

Still enjoying good food with amazing company.  I love the fact I can enjoy some good Peruvian food, tasty Italian, and vegan feasting.  My favorite kind of diet.

IMG_0440

IMG_0475

IMG_0532Semi-homade tasty Italian 😀

I did make pancakes which of course needed to be shared.  All I used was an organic whole grain pancake mix, an egg, almond milk, then doctored up with some cranberries and pecans.  Amazing!

IMG_0454

What happens in-between this thing called life, makes what I do worth it.  Good vibes, weather, company, and food.  Here’s to another month.  A month of maybe a little more adventure, laughs, and treasured moments.  I am ready for you.

IMG_0692

My dears!  Have I got a story for you!  Ok, not so much a story, but short tidbit of a day and night out.  I thought I was happening the best day of my life, in a very, very, long time.  What started out as a reason to just get out, turned into a feeling I almost forgot existed.

I decided to go the extra mile, or few, and took a ride toward St. Petersburg.  I loved every moment of it.  I mostly located myself on the outskirts of the downtown area to right by the bay area.  Beautiful.

First stop, was the Morean Arts Center.  That’s where, I got out of my element a little more and was able to take a writing class.  Definitely been a while since sat down in any class like that.  To be honest, I did not think I would get much out of it, since it was mostly about story’s.  Yet, it’s funny how you can see the similarities between totally different pieces of writing when looking at the person behind the words.

IMG_0746

Afterwards, it was imperative I go to the Saturday Morning Market.  I had been hearing really nice things about this place, with other peoples comments ending in, “You would really like it.”  Vegetables, scenery, and cute local stand.  Duh!

IMG_0732

Just from going through the streets around downtown alone, you can tell it has it’s own touch of a city and town.  Older houses and apartments, different local shops, even music from every corner while still keeping a sense of calmness.  I think that alone is Florida thing.  Laid back feeling with their own sense of a city flair.

IMG_0724

IMG_0730

Can we talk about how hot it still was in Florida?!  Was not prepared.  I actually ended up buying a dress from a small stand, changed in the porto potty, and grabbed a beef empanada for my walk back towards my car.  Ended up being perfect timing.  As I got lost, or rather lost track of where I was supposed to be walking, I found myself in a more deserted residential area.  My phone dead, a little whole-in-the-wall convenient store, with my empanada and water bottle in hand.  As I walked with my flowy symbolic dress, fringe, and curls, I couldn’t help but feel a little more in tune with the quaint hippie vibe of this town.

IMG_0759

IMG_0784

As the day passed it only got better.  Finally made my way to the beach!  You really can never go wrong with a beach.  As long as you expect great water views, sand between your toes, sun and breeze, that’s all you really need.

IMG_0843

My uncle invited me to check out Clearwater Beach.  Probably one of the best known and popular of Florida’s west coast.  Kind of took me home.  With a mini street boardwalk, hotels, and families walking along, definitely resembles one of the iconic Jersey Shore boardwalks.

We walked.  We ate. We saw.  All I needed.

IMG_0800

I would love to try and do something like this once a month.  Something new, experiences and feels.  It’s a goal.  A way to see there is something more out there than just the streets between the apartment to the mall.  One of my favorites is not what you want to do, but how you want to feel.

August Thangs: Foodie Style

IMG_0304

I love these kinds of posts. I just drown you in pictures.  It’s amazing.

August, has been one of those months.  Felt like the longest month ever.  I almost feel bad for rushing it, but I’m over it.  I’m ready for a new season, new lipsticks, different foods, and a detox.  But until then, I enjoyed what I could.

IMG_0210

So, I wanted to start on touching base about getting back into it.  Into the holistic healthy way of living I love so much.  Seriously.  My cravings for greens and fresh ingredients were at it’s highest this season than ever before.  So, for starters, I got back into meal prepping.  Mostly breakfast and lunch.

IMG_0215Chia Seed Pudding

IMG_0404Tomato and Cucumber Quinoa Salad (Recipe coming soon!)

Coming home, I will not lie that I do not stray far from the usual.  This is that “growing up hispanic” things.  Especially with a Grandma who always wants to see you eating.  Rice and beans.  Avocado. Kimchi for good measure (and good digestion).

IMG_0356

IMG_0277

Did we notice anything different?  Meeeeaaaaattt!  My other craving.  During the month, I’ve become a bit of a crazy sleeper.  Sometimes 3 hours, sometimes 8 hours.  That’s where I fell most short when trying to get on track.  I used food and a lot of coffee to keep me energized.  No, I didn’t picture all the starbucks and cafe con leche I consumed in two weeks.  Protien and fats kept me full the most, and my paychecks allowed for the extra goodies and pounds as well 😉

Then you have the times when you are sans groceries or rushing around trying to put on crazy eyeliner.  Whole Foods Market always has my back.

IMG_0295

IMG_0284

I don’t think I COOKED anything for myself this month.  Don’t ask me to cook for you.  Only breakfast.  I own breakfast.

IMG_0290

IMG_0161I live for eggs. And simplicity.

I also went out a few times.  I think twice out of the those times I did, I was pretty impressed.

IMG_0183

I finally found a Peruvian restaurant in Tampa, that lives up to the ones in NJ I hold near and dear.  Machu Picchu Restaurant did it for me. A standard Saltado de Mariscos, that was delicious in it’s own simplicity.  Out of trying two other places in the area, I was so happy to find a place I really enjoyed!

Let’s talk about brunch.  I have been brunch deprived.  It’s a shame too, because you can never go wrong with brunch, just need enough mimosas to cancel out bad food.  Luckily, I have some foodie friends here who are willing to show and try new places with me!  First stop, Ella’s Folk Art Cafe for Soul Food Sundays!

IMG_0370
There’s bacon on my Bloody Mary.  Super Lame fact:  I didn’t eat it.

IMG_0372Tofu and Portabella Barbecue Sandwich.  It made my heart and stomach warm.

Would definitely love to try this place again.  The menu looked amazing!

Other times, you are a little cheap, kind of lazy, and ready for a weekend.  That’s when frozen vegan pizza and cheap wine come to the rescue.  Late night cozy lovin’.

IMG_0318

Other events did occur that didn’t have much to do with food.  I discovered a new mall.  Tanned at least once.  And I WENT TO YOGA.  AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK.  Big deals people.  It was scary and hard.  But it brought back feelings and memories.  Those inspirational kickass feelings you get doing a warrior 2 while your sweat turns into puddles.  Remembering that even though your body cannot do what it once did one year ago, you know your body still has the ability to get there again.  Goddamn yoga, you win me over every time.

August, you were alright.  Started out slow, but how quickly did everything happen all at once.  Feelings, decisions, and a start in planning something new.  September, I hope you are ready for me.

IMG_0367Super fullmoon ritual.  Candles, incense, and wine.

Until next time, my dears,

Embracing a Transformational Season

So Spring is officially here.  I know there has been a mix of weather going on.  Here in the Sunshine State? Well let’s just say I got a bit of a Summer glow already 😉  I know the cold, and even snow, is around for some people, but now is the perfect time to recognize and embrace the small changes!  Longer days, prettier sunsets, and a little more green to come.

I wanted to try and incorporate a post about how to embrace spring in a more holistic healthy view and realistic bad-ass-self way.  So let’s try and do this, shall we?

Now here is Florida, I must admit it has been Spring for the last month, borderline summer.  I am not complaining, but rather embraced it with open arms.  First and foremost, I definitely been eating way more salads and fresh veggies.  With local fruits and vegetables always in stock from the warmer season, their is really no excuse not to get the most of optimum nutrition from your meals.  In season for your environment is key to staying healthy during the year.  Your body wants the food the earth has naturally provided!

During spring the foods are lighter.  We are talking greens to help detox your body of winters extras still in the system.  How to do it?  Add more juices to your regimen.  You don’t need to go into full detox mode, but rather slowly, your body can get into a transformation on it’s own.  So, not just juices, but fresh greens, even chopped vegetable salads to get the full hydration and nutrition your body deserves going into the warmer months.
Get active and get out there!!!  Not only will this help your body transformation, but your mind as well.  Join a gym.  Go practice yoga.  Go walking/running.  Make an effort to start your own exercise routine.  To be honest, this is something that I fell back on.  I am more of a foodie than a fitness person.  But I am allowing a little extra and time (and money) to the cause.  Our body needs the sweat to cleanse and get our systems moving again.  Going out and do that gives us that motivation.  What better motivation then seeing others wanting to kick some ass and fat too!

Now, when I say get out there, I say that because usually the winter months gives us the perfect excuse to stay home more, eat a little hardier, and just get cozy with close family and friends.  I’ve been using this gorgeous weather in Florida to never stay home.  Semi amazing- semi dangerous.  But, moving on.  I love the fact that I can explore this state with the advantage of amazing weather.  I’ve been trying to get around in Tampa.  Since the city is so big, I usually have somewhere new to go, even if it involves just walking around, passing the river.

For all my North Easterners, go down town, farmer’s markets, parks, NYC!!!  Ugh, what I would give to go to my local downtown or walk around the city for a couple of hours.  Crazy, you really do take things for granted that were once so accessible to you.  I really believe you can make the best of what’s around you now.

Warning: Beautiful weather may cause the urge to have too much fun.

I feel as if this part is more for the summer or leading up to that amazing season.  Here in Florida, it already is beach and pool weather.  Sorry I’m not sorry.  The downfall of having heat so soon.  Damn, your girl did not have enough time to get bikini ready!  As of now, I am balancing the angel inside of me that is say, “Get your green juice on and coconut water.”  But, then I have this dormant party girl saying “Girrrlll, time for mojitos!!”  Do we see the dilemma?

Although, I have no problem balancing the two.  Love a good green smoothie and a nice summer drank.  Ok, I’m going to stop writing how I talk.  If you know me, this is real talk.

Between eating a bit lighter, more sweat, and more social event, I guarantee your energy will go up and the pounds will gently come off.

Part 2:  Transformation within the Universe

I chose to write this post now, because as of late I’ve become extremely into the stars.  I can’t help notices the “coincidences”  of what has happened in my life as of late.  From the moment they told me come January, I would be going through a change that will be life altering, to now where the planets have aligned to help me deal with something that has been very difficult for me… Relationships.

This Full Moon Total Lunar Eclipse, Blood Moon, will occur early in the morning on Saturday, at least for my Easterners.  The Full Moon gives off nothing more than pure energy.  The moon rules the tides, the waters.  As our body is mostly just that water, we tend to feel this energy, and can be mistaken for the acts of crazy’s that come about during this time.

Libra’s Lunar Eclipse, I’ve read, is about love and compassion.  With a relationship with a loved one that has been a bit estrange and difficult,  to even the intimate ones that have been a bit confusing.  We must move forward, and respond with nothing more than understanding and an open heart.  Even if it’s HARD.  To be honest, writing this helps me realize what I need to do and where I need to direct my energy.

So whilst, you don’t spend too much of your energy on relationships that don’t seem to be all there, focus it on your creativity.  This is the Moon to get into the relationship with yourself, and pick up on something that has been brewing for quite a while.  I know for myself, I’ve been having a hard time with just that as well.  I may not know exactly where I’m heading, I can only try to stay on track on where I believe I want to go, a journey through wellness and adventure.

Transformation from the inside out….

P.S.  Sometimes a smile, even when your upset, helps the cause.  Dress how you want to feel, that helps as well.  Even when going through what may feel like the toughest time, put on some lipstick or get a fresh cut, and get the fuck out there!!

Tampa Bae

IMG_7550

Cheesy title?  Clever title?  Well, I thoroughly enjoy it.  I’m a sucker for silly “pun intended” use of words.  Ya’ dig?

IMG_7514

IMG_7520January 6, 2015. New Jersey.

Anywayssss, so I don’t know if I ever posted on my blog, but I am a born and bred Jersey girl.  I have dealt with beautiful, hot, and humid summers, that come with a side of Jersey Shore dirty water and boardwalks.  And more recently, very cold, snowy winters, which I think now appealed to my younger years of snow days.   I hadn’t realize till now, what a love-hate relationship I had with New Jersey.  If my title hadn’t gave it away, I now reside in the Sunshine State, Florida. More specifically, the ever so growing and moving, suburban-city of Tampa.

IMG_7793

IMG_7559January 9, 2015. Tampa, Florida.

So how does it feel?

Honestly? Bittersweet.

I always said I would be happier in warmer weather.  To be able to hang out outside, not have to worry about layers of clothing, boots, and snow to shovel (even though I never shovel).  I’m a sucker for local produce, raw fruits and veggies, and minimal clothing as possible.  I like to spend money on $5 dollar tshirts, more than $40 dollar sweaters.  Can we talk about the local Florida avocados?

IMG_7595

IMG_7754

IMG_7572

I’ve been exploring the area a bit more.  Thankful to have a super helpful uncle to inform and show us around.  I like to take frequent trips to different grocery stores.  I have a Whole Foods Market, Walmart, Publix, and local health food store one minute from each other.  Literally.  It’s a pretty busy and crowded area, with every store and chain imaginable around the corner on a main highway.  I wouldn’t say I love it, but I don’t hate it.  It’s convenient and a nice excuse to take an easy ride.

IMG_7605

IMG_7747

So with beautiful weather, local produce, and city vibe, what may be the downfall? Well, the people that aren’t here with me.  I swore I needed the change, I needed something to shake me.  And boy, did Florida shake the fuck out of me.   I believe the stars had forewarned me, as the universe created it.  I never once been away from home for more than a week.  And usually while I was gone, I was surround by family or friends.  I’ve always been a more shy and reserved person when in a new environment.  It’s not till I become comfortable are you privilege to see my crazy, loud, smart-mouthing side 😉

I now wish I can  enjoy this weather and change with everyone I care about.  On one hand, who I know I can count on is here with me. We help each other and can count on each other for a lot, and I really value that right now.  But, girlfriend time over coffee and wine will be limited.  Family birthdays and special events won’t be as easy.  Phone calls, must replace the human interaction I find incredibly special and important.  Touch and sight.  Is this what you call homesick?

IMG_7834

IMG_7870

IMG_7741

I tell myself this is the perfect opportunity to do things I always found harder to do while in Jersey.  With less people around I can focus most of my time with work and activities.  Full-time work and this thing called healthy living as my side hustle.  I can blog now all day and talk about my new experiences and informations with y’all.  I’m excited for what’s to come with this.

You know that quote, “money can’t buy happiness,”?  I’ve never believed so much in the money, even though now, I am trying to do this crazy hard thing called saving.  #adultthangs.  Right now, I’m banking on the Vitamin D to bring me some happiness.  C’mon sun! Warm my soul and give me a tan already!

Will you stick around and see what’s good with Tampa Bay?  Family and friends, if you can’t be here with me, then read along with me.  I always said I wanted to travel and explore something new.  Well I got what I ask for, and hopefully this is just my first stop.

IMG_7690

So here is to change, Florida avocados, humidity, positive vibes, and day dreams.
