Conscious Beauty: DIY Face Scrub

IMG_1697

My dears, I have another beauty post for ya’ll!

My skin care and beauty routine has definitely taken a huge leap over the last few years.  Whether its converting myself from drug store products to expensive brand cleansers and creams, I have tried it all.  The perfect skin is still far from reach, but after all this time, I finally discovered the secret! Or, rather experienced it.  Not only does it reduce puffiness, but it actually makes you feel and look a little more radiant and alive! SLEEP!

Yes, I said it.  I know it’s been something everyone’s been raving about.  But for the first time I had consecutive days of early rises FOLLOWED by early bed times.  Magical.  I found myself not needing to put a load of make up (eye-makeup) to feel and look alive.  What I noticed most were the under eye baggage not being as prominent, which is actually a hereditary struggle for myself.  Try sleep, it’s great.

Any way, I promise this was not the only thing I wanted to share with you.  I just thought since we were on the subject of break-through beauty thangs…. On to the good stuff.

How has these winter months been treating you?  Well, what I really want to know is how your skin is doing? If you are anything like my vata-self (windy, dry, and cold), then you most likely feel like the whole world is ending at times.  Or rather, you might just feel itchy and dry.  Same thing?

As you know, I’ve been experimenting with lot’s of DIY products.  From homemade deodorant, to easy face cleansers, I try to always make it easily adjustable for everyone. This one is no different.  It is pretty simple, and does what’s needed for anyone looking to get rid of dry skin, and help skin feel rejuvenated and soft.

Natural ingredients, each having their own reason to shine and have you shining as well.

  • Sugar – Natural scrub/exfoliator.  Helps rid dead and flaky skin.
  • Coconut oil – Helps moisturize and hydrate dry skin.  Fight acne.  Antibacterial and antioxidant properties to keep skin healthy and protected.
  • Lemon – Balances pH on skin.  Helps brighten and soften skin.  Rids dead skin cells combined with sugar.

This recipe calls for a pretty small portion, but it is perfect since a little goes along way and you don’t need to use it everyday.  I recommend about twice a week at least.  It keeps in the fridge for at least a month, but I recommend smelling and keeping it eye on it after.  Like any natural food like product, use your senses for any spoilage.

You may add another nightly moisturizer to seal hydration.

How to Get Over Being Busy. Now.

IMG_1932

You know those days.. weeks?  months?  Those times you can’t believe you still have enough energy to even eat.  When we really think about it, the question “How they are doing?” usually ends with busy.  Nowadays more than ever, if you aren’t busy, then your way of living is questionable.  You must have a shit-ton of loans to pay off, jobs, a family, or rather busy trying to create a family.  How did that happen?  When did we want to be so busy all the time? And to the point, that should we have a little free time, we become bored?

IMG_1697

DIY coming up soon!

I must say that I found myself about to break last week.  I have this very bad tendency of sacrificing sleep above anything else.  I know I can function (enough for what I need) on four to six hours for a few days.  Then I crashed.  There was also a sense of guilt.  How can I neglect my passions!  Whether it’s writing this blog or thinking of new ideas and programs, I love to spend any free time I had doing it. For myself, it’s not just a hobby, but a bigger part of my life.  I didn’t remember saying everything else was more important.  This is when I stepped back and remembered, “I got this.”  This is what I want.

IMG_1739

Sofrito for the soul

So where do we draw the line in order fit in what and who is most important to us?  When can we say stop, THIS is what I want to do?

  1.  Prioritize.  Yes, your job is important.  Your family is important.  Your health is important.  Your passions are important.  But, I might go further to say what will sustain you.  What will give you that balance?  A job does provide money for food and shelter, whether for just yourself or anyone else.  So, first accept that you do what you can to get what you need.  Then stop.  Work your ass off and breathe.  Because, at the end of the day you probably have a few other things that you want to get done, even experience.
  2. Find something you enjoy.  And become good at it.  This is one key to being happy by yourself, with yourself, and for yourself.  Become good at something that makes you want to work hard and find time to do this new hobby/side-hustle/art.  Whether it be as simple as reading a book, to a whole new yoga practice.  You will find yourself working just as hard on other priorities and love being able to come back to that.  You can keep busy doing what you love.  Who knew?
  3. Let it go.  This seems to work for almost anything.  As a culture, the goal is to do better, stay focused, and stay busy.  Even I at times find myself thinking, “Ok, now what?”  That’s when it’s time to say, “Yes!” and enjoy a good old comedy show.  It actually feels great.  There is always something to do, but sometimes it’s best to just hang out.  Laugh with others or to yourself watching something good.  If you feel you can do a little more, but still want to just relax, Pinterest!  Ideas and creativity while in your sweatpants is always a great thing.
  4. Start with yourself.  Don’t wait for anything or anyone. Eat well and get sleep.  Everyone has short-comings  when they become busy and mine is the latter.  These two things alone help me stay focus on busy days and enjoy life how I like the other days.  Staying focus helps you understand what has to be done and what you want to do, which really comes down to how you want to feel.

Nobody wants to feel too busy they can’t find time for what they love.  And when you do find the time, you don’t want to feel anything other than happy and relaxed.  This is for you not to forget about what’s important.  In kindergarden we have nap time and snack time.  As adults, we have me-time.  Let’s get back to that!

Quick and Easy Fried Rice

IMG_1769
So, one of my goals to eat healthier and get back into a more consistent/routine practice had to do with cooking.  Now, more than ever I have a great opportunity to utilize a working kitchen, using a lot more of the ingredients I love.  As well, I am trying to use methods to create the cost-effective and health conscious meals for myself and others.  If you struggle with feeding yourself and others with limited time and budget this post is for you.  Even if you don’t, this is a great easy break for you experienced-love-to-cook chefs 😉

I wanted to make enough food in one day to last almost three.  From one meal of rice and beans, I used the left over rice to make an easy and quick fried rice recipe.

IMG_1752

What makes this recipe cost-effective are the use of frozen vegetables and cabinet spices.  I don’t know about you, but sometimes I slip on keeping up with planned meals and end up having VERY old wilted vegetables.  Also, it’s a great way to get a variety without buying a crazy amount.  Cabinet spices definitely helped when you forget the fresh basics, such as garlic and ginger, but still makes for a great taste.

I saved time having the rice cooked.  After that, you just cook the egg!

Disclaimer:  I don’t tend to measure ingredients when cooking.  I use the old taste and tell method of measurement, so most of these are estimations.  Feel free to change to your liking!

IMG_1776Quick and Easy Fried Rice

  • Half pot of already cooked rice (white or brown)
  • 2 packages frozen stir-fry vegetables
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup canola or sesame seed oil
  • 1/4 cup kimchi juice or rice vinegar
  • 1/3 cup tamari soy sauce
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 2 tsp garlic
  • 4 scallions chopped
  • salt and pepper to taste

Heat up your rice and defrost the vegetables in 2 different pots.  As they heat up you can create your sauce.  I used canola oil, kimchi juice from the jar, tamari, and spices.  Set aside.

Combine the vegetable and rice once warm.  Scramble the two eggs and add to the pot.  Mix together and then combine with sauce.  Add the scallions in, plus more for garnish. Salt and pepper to taste!

IMG_1783

I served mine with a little hot sauce and a dijon Mahi Mahi.  I only defrost the fish and then smothered it with dijon mustard and leftover sauce!  Right into the oven it went!

I hope you enjoy!

February Intentions

IMG_1544

My dears,

It’s one month in, into the New Year.  How’d it go for you? How are you feeling?  Nothing is getting me more excited than this month of February.  My January, I must admit, did not go exactly as planned, but I must say there was a lot of realizations, acceptance, patience, and prep.  Preparations to new beginnings.

Emotions and adjustments were big as well.  For one, it’s cold.  I told myself I would not complain about it, because in the end I did make the conscious decision to leave behind my palm trees and humidity.  I do become a little uneasy when 50 degrees is considered warm, as I am wrapped up in layers home.  Even in familiar surroundings and situations, I’ve been trying to balance work, family and friends, planning, and me-time.  Those were a few things I never had to worry about as much in the past year, so one month was perfect to take it all in.

Regardless, trying to enjoy my time in general is taking priority.  If you can not do it all, take advantage of what you can.  Starting small is where I’m at.  Day trips!  New places to eat!  Taking advantage of snow days in to reorganize, get cozy, and get a little more acquainted with yourself.  Anyone already planning their vacations?  I love hearing people setting dates!  It’s the commitment to enjoy a little something more.

The best part?  Working is becoming more and more something I enjoy.  Everything from my full-time job to making my start at a new part-time.  You guys!  This blog!  I’ve been enjoying it all, the commitments, improvements, and dedication.

If you can say it was about the same for yourself, do not be surprised.  We have a New Moon coming up, and it is the start of the Lunar New Year!  So all those plans of January?  Maybe new opportunities, starts of new promotions, are going hopefully take off this month.  Make sure to make room for them.  Clear/clean it up.  Let go of those things, people, and emotions that did not work you.  Take pride in your living situation and make it beautiful.  Think of this as a start to Spring cleaning, inside and out.

IMG_1645

Keep on with the intentions, adventures, and revolutions, it’s only the beginning!

P.S.  I know this post is lacking on the pic department, I feel as if I’m missing something.  What do you think?  I’m still having web issues, so hopefully by next post I have it fixed up.  Just another intention 😉

Conscious Beauty: Makeup Edition

IMG_1038

So, here is my next guilty pleasure.  Face painting I would like to call it.  Seriously though, it’s creation!

As a lover of all things holistic and natural, some may ask, “Why the makeup?”.  To be honest, it’s what makes me feel beautiful.  Sometimes, it’s fun.  Other times, it’s a confidence booster.  So, why not?  I’m a firm believer of doing what makes you feel nothing but amazing.  Whether it’s the food you eat or the clothes you wear, it’s nothing more than self expression.

IMG_1299

Although, here is my little quirk: give me all the natural cremes, the cruelty-free lipsticks, and vegan products.  Without becoming too crazy and obsessed, these are some of the things I look for.  And to remind you: I try.  Some products I just plain love.

With my foundations, blushes and primers, I do strive for the all-natural; sometimes even organic.  Keep in mind, it takes money.  I choose my battles.  For myself, if I am going to put a product directly onto my often sensitive/dry skin, I would like for it to be made with mostly natural, plant-derived ingredients.  For the most direct face makeup, I go with tarte cosmetics; known to be made without parabens and sulfates, these products are also cruelty-free and vegan!  They last all day, are easily applied and my skin never feels dried out, clogged, or irritated after use…I seriously can’t ask for more!

Summer Look: Base – tarte BB creme in medium tan

Now for the play…  DRAMATIC eyes and lips! I used to be a die hard Sephora fan for Urban Decay’s lipsticks, as well as Kat Von D’s amazing products.  To be honest, I remain loyal. Their products are fun, cruelty-free, and even have some vegan options!  They also have very strong pigment, as in a little goes a long way.  Pricey, but the color and products lasts a whole day to a whole season or two.

Conscious.  Amazing.  Love.  (Empty pockets…?)

To avoid breaking the bank at times, I discovered NYX cosmetics.  PETA-approved.. that’s all I needed for play.  It’s cost-conscious and with crazy, funky colors that are long-lasting and easy to apply.  I noticed there lips are light with light application.  With just a few more swipes the color becomes rich and bright.  Lipsticks, which is something I noticed I always get asked about, and eyeliner work amazing, but I must admit, the eyeshadow… let’s just say I need more practice.

NYX soft matte – Copenhagen / Urban Decay – Jilted / Kat Von D – Echo

So here is some of my tried and true..mostly my favorites.  Any day at work or night out, a little blush/contour, and a bright lipstick is always my go-to.  Once in awhile, I experiment with a little smoky, dramatic eyeliner.  Why not..  Just a little play can make some of us women feel a little more…BADASS.  And that goes with the natural look as well.  There’s nothing I love more than days off and a clean face…less of a nightly routine to follow at the end of the day 😉

IMG_1205

So have fun!  Feel amazing!

I have another post coming up.  For those who love to experiment with a natural, DIY kind of beauty or just want to try something new, another Conscious Beauty post will come soon enough!  So, let me know your guilty pleasures.  Whether makeup, burgers, or TV show!  What do you enjoy?  Maybe it’s a little different from your everyday brand?!  That’s something we will also be talking about! 😀

Till next time my dears!

My “Nothing is Forever” Relocation

IMG_1260

It’s about time, right?!  I hope you all had an amazing holiday and New Year!  I am finally back and even if I’m not ready, I’m just going to do it anyway.  That is this post!  I am back to the cold weather and back to work!

I had to say goodbye to the beauty of Florida on New Years Day.  Not the easiest of decisions I’ve had to make.  My palm trees and warm sun are a thing of the past, but made up an experience I never want to forget.  From my family with me there and the amazing people I met through it all, my time in Florida is truly something I want to hold close.

IMG_0758

Even though I did not think it would be forever, I did think it would a bit longer.  Long enough to make a living, friendships, and travels to a few more places in the sunshine state.  I may not have gotten those exact things, but I did get something much greater.  I realized what I wanted to do for a living and made relationships with people that I know  will last for longer time than I would have imagined.  I realized how I want to feel.  And, as far as home?  Home is where the heart is and mine stayed in Jersey.  Although, now I can say an important part is now in Florida.

What helped make my decision?  One part was what was gained.  A new perspective and realizing the difference between what I want and what is best (it’s not always the same).  Another part was realizing what I lost.  That part of my soul that believed in what connected all of us, such as the power of smile.

IMG_1078

So, New Jersey became home once again, and probably for awhile.  Yet, nothing is forever.  When asked if I was here for good by a coworker, all I could really get out was “For now, yea.”

I never thought anyone should feel ashamed for something not working out.  Life is full of mistakes and full of lessons, but hey, we did it and if you’re reading this, you are still here!  Still able to make a ton more of great decisions, good and bad.  Whether anything from a relationship to a job, it happened for a reason, and most likely, you learned a hell of a lot from it.  That’s what I am saying to myself.  I learned, I accepted, and I am moving on.

So here’s to a new year, a new start, and a new part to a never ending adventure.

P.S.  But until death do us part, family, friends and food… that’s forever shit 😉
