Summer Series: Farmers Market Guide

IMG_3231*Warning: Beautiful pictures to follow. May cause an urge to be out in the Summer sun all day with a green juice.*

I did my first official run to the farmers market about a week ago.  For myself, that means a beautiful day required.  I need to take my time and enjoy what I love to do best.  SHOP FOR FOOD.  I scope the premise and options.  Then I start picking what I like, grab a little snack, and I am on my way.  Simple.

If you are finally entering a warmer climate for the Spring Season, the markets I believe are finally here and with a lot to choose from.  Now is the perfect time to get the most out of them.  It’s not just about organic and locality, it’s really about getting in tune with yourself and community.  I say yourself, because what the Earth provides you with is what would be most beneficial for you.  You support your health and your community as well.  Knowing where and who is putting the food on your table is rewarding for both sides.

Where I’m at it’s a late Spring haul.  This is the time for much more seasonal variety.  What we are still loving:

  • Greens – Kale, lettuces, spinach
  • Cabbage
  • Radishes
  • Asparagus

Then we have some new additions:

  • Strawberries
  • Rhubarb
  • Zucchini
  • Spring onions galore! IMG_3185

With this produce, you are easily good to buy for the week.  And you definitely do not want to skip the herbs.  So many to choose from!  They have both in bulk and then in the pots, which is very accessible and practical for those that want to buy their own to plant.

My personal favorites to always have on hand:

  • Parsley
  • Mint
  • Basil
  • Cilantro

And for my meat-eaters and cheese-lovas, we got you covered.  Most of the meat you see in farmers markets are hormone-free, free-range and pastured raised.  Since not operated by big corporations, you can be assured that animals were raised and killed in humane ways.  You are ALWAYS welcomed to ask questions to the farmers who raise the animals or obtain the meat.  They are usually very pleasant and informative about those things.

Don’t forget to try out local vendors!  Seriously amazing foods.  Usually made with seasonal ingredients, they are a great way to try something new and get ideas for yourself.

I have a few ideas of my own and have already started!  Can’t wait to share with you all very soon!

Saying Goodbye, Saying Hello

Isn’t saying goodbye the hardest thing sometimes?  I know I may be exaggerating with my reasoning behind it, but I can’t help myself.  The last day of my favorite farmers market was yesterday 😦  And I would like to say it was a memorable one.

The temperatures were below freezing and the winds were brutal, but I didn’t care, I was determined to make the most out of it.  Easily still the best part of my weekend.  The only not so great part?  Bags were heavy.  I got some some vegetables for Thanksgiving!

Only bringing a side dish of roasted butternut squash, brussel sprouts, and cranberries.  Maybe some balsamic vinegar?  I think that would go good with the cranberries.

If I can’t host Thansgiving, then I want to bring something that can show healthy food can be delicious and healthy!  Even on Thanksgiving.  I know I won’t be eating turkey, but everything else seems to be fair game.  My motto?  Homemade is always better.  Unless it’s a Whole Foods salad.  Will always have my heart…

(Insert green juice)

I had no better day off in a long time.  Filled with my alone time market adventures, to some home cooked meals, all I need was a early morning yoga flow and I would have been set.  But, we can’t have it all right?  False.  Just not right now 🙂

So as we say good bye to one thing, it’s only fair to realize the start of another.  I may not be able to spend my Sunday mornings roaming around a lot full of fresh produce, fresh baked bread and treats, but as the weather get’s cold, I might not mind.  Maybe this will just give me more time to be in the kitchen, getting ready for another one of my favorite things…

Happy Monday, loves!

Not too Shabby

Good morning!!

Hope you guys are ready for another week!  I am just ready for a day off!  My weekend was actually pretty good.  I think I’m finally finding balance in the weekend, where Monday I don’t feel too drained… or bloated.  Since I usually still have a pretty busy schedule, I still tried to eat good with little hints of indulgence.

Start off innocent…IMG_3227

Also been taking advantage of the fall weather.  Walks outside at night and of course the farmers market.  Oh how I will miss thee.  Probably the best part of my weekend was the farmers market and whole foods.  I didn’t have a lot to get and wasn’t in a rush so it was nice to just stroll around.  My favorite finds…

Ending with an early night… I am ready for the week, and of course my day off 🙂

Enjoy your week, loves!

This Is How We Do

Good morning everyone!

Hope you all had a good weekend?  Or week I should say.  I can definitely say mine was pretty low key.  Same old with work, yoga, and trying to sleep.  What has been a little more exciting are my eats.  I really did try to cook more and eat a little better.  Although I noticed something that my family likes to do… and that is eat.  We love different foods and every occasion is a great occasion to hang out and eat.

IMG_2921For example, when some invites you out to lunch and treats, my instinct is to take that offer.  Low budget hunger can get the best out of people…

Try explaining to them that you are on a diet.  I got crazy faces.  So I ate anyways, and each time was utterly delicious.  Between just random outings, leftovers, and clean out the fridge days.  My meals were different, yummy, and filling.  That’s really what matters right? There were some green juices and kombuchas to balance it all out 😉

Oh, and then there are treats… Those utterly delicious balls of (vegan) butter or cheese that I think deserve because I was so good…

Do you like parties?  I’m really not a party person.  But I do love gatherings… especially when there is good food, and every gathering that involves Puerto Ricans always has food.  When the family is over you know, you know you are about to eat good.  And what better way to treat the birthday girl to some good food.  Homemade or not… twas delicious.

So here’s to a new week! More work, project, and of course food!

Happy Monday!

One More Week!

Good morning to you all!

Hope you guys had a spectacular weekend.  Mine was definitely filled with some good and could-be-betters, so I am actually glad it is Monday.  I have one more week till vacation and I plan to make it count.  Got a couple of more things added on to my plate of to-dos.

My weekend…. some randoms.  I wasn’t all about picturing every meal, but the ones that were spectacular, I planned to share.  Some even surprising!

I almost felt like that was a tease… so few!  Promise better ones next weekend!  Vacation weekend 😉

Enjoy your Monday!

Good morning, loves!

I hope you all got to enjoy your weekend!  Mine was pretty good.   A little bit of work, a little bit of play, and a lot of good 😉

Started my weekend as a my week starts.  Can’t help it.  I love it.IMG_0569

Some of my faves…

IMG_0605Ending with a Garden Fresh Frittata made by Mama!

I lied.  Weekend ended with a pint of coconut milk ice cream and a movie.  It just seemed like the right thing to do at the time.  Paranorman, anyone?  Pretty good.  Pretty Scary.

So my goal for the week is to be a little more productive.  I noticed that I give myself a lot of time in the morning to do the essentials.  The first hour is always chill time.  Don’t ever take that away from me, you will regret it if you do *Professor Umbridge voice*

Mostly I’m taking about, the next part of my morning.  I’m talking about taking even the only measly 10 min I have more seriously, the hour before yoga, more enjoyably.  Whether it be baking.  Planning the rest of my day.  School stuff.   DYI!!!  I may even have to start writing more lists.  I know some people get a real thrill out of those.  They are alright, I guess.  I used to be better at this, I don’t remember how I let it slip away.  Anyways, let us see how this week goes.  Maybe I may even indulge myself in a bedtime read :*

Until next time, my dears!

Good morning loves!

Hope you all had a good weekend.  Today is definitely feeling like a Monday for me, as my Friday night started on Saturday instead.  Oh boy, am I feeling it….

The Shocker

Now, today is all about recovery.  Not so much from the food, but from that run!  I actually used my sneakers for some form of exercise.  After being a “runner” back in the day, a three year hiatus definitely makes a difference.  The three miles was fine, one day later and I could barely get out of bed!  My ankles to my upper back was so stiff.  I went for yoga for some heat, stretching, and sweat.  In hopes to detox and stretch out my muscles first.  Hopefully some good nutrients will do a body good today.  I’m in a bit of a rush, so I hope the pictures made up for lack of words 😉

Enjoy the day loves!
